Android acquires nonverbal communication skills

As Japan’s population continues to age and shrink, more and more people are looking at robots as a way to improve productivity and support the nation’s changing lifestyles. With human-robot interactions on the rise, and with the recognition that much of human communication is nonverbal, researchers at Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) have developed an autonomous humanoid robot they say can recognize and use body language.

Brian the Brain

This is a great idea if you’ve got kids who get bored doing their homework. It’s also a great parent aide (particularly if you get asked those tricky questions like “how high is the sky?” or “when was Cleopatra born?”, or “how do you spell ‘prestidigitation’?”) As Brian has stored within his animatronic brain The Concise Encyclopedia from Britannica®, a dictionary and also a world history timeline, you should be able to ask him virtually anything and he should know.

Secret of robots’ outstanding performance

ROBOTIS(www.robotis.com) is the very developer of its actuators ‘Dynamixel’ that 28 humanoid robot teams participating in ‘RoboCup 2007’ adopted.

Dynamixel is a high-performance actuator controlled by digital packet communication. It has unique ID controlled by Packet communication on a bus. It supports network of TTL, RS 485, and CAN, etc. depending on model. The Dynamixel can read current position of it or speed as well as various information such as internal temperature, supply voltage, target position.

Featuring simple connection structure, it gives you feedback when internal temperature, torque, supply voltage escapes from appointed range. Also in such emergency situation, it flashes LED.

CB2 Japanese Robot Child

The Japan Science and Technology Agency recently unveiled their Child-Robot with Biometric Body, or CB2 for short. Designed to mimic a one to two year-old toddler, it senses the environment through optical, auditory, and 200 tactile sensors. Then, the childbot can react, making facial expressions complete with blinking.

51 actuators powered by air assure smooth movements, though the robot can only stand with assistance. Not only does this limit of movement give users the complete child experience, it also prevents Asimo incidents on the stairs.
